Context
Build a design system from the beginning of a startup has proven me to be beneficial when a new member join the company and can immediately manage to start contributing to the project.
Discovery
During the development of the visual language (learn more), building the foundation of the design system was mandatory in order to bring a consistent user experience. Starting from scratch, and with an atomic design framework in mind, I decided to focus on a couple of simple components: colors, typography and essential components. This strategy allowed me to create designs much quicker. For example, if I needed to create an input field, I could begin with a default state and add others at a later stage.
Development
Illustrations emerge as a big part in the user experience. And contrary to appearances, it wasn’t that easy. Illustration is an intuitive and subjective art form, which can make it challenging to translate into a systematic language that can works across the user experience.
I kept it simple: fairly minimalist to exit any complexity in order to symbolize the simplicity of the app as the main core.
Delivery
Even at a startup level, I knew that the first version of the design system didn’t need to be perfect (it never will be), but it needed to make an impact for the company: simplify the futur development, reduce time spent in Figma, and build a consistent product.
